Portable Wheelchair Ramp Regulations and Guidelines

I’ve been ranting about the fact we have no Official Guidelines on Portable Wheelchair Ramps for years.

Hopefully this may change one day as I was recently approached by someone from Edinburgh Access Panel who will be approaching the BSI with a view to obtaining a new BS for the manufacturing of Portable Wheelchair Ramps.

The sooner the better in my opinion as in the 15+ years that I have been selling wheelchair ramps I have seen numerous that I wouldn’t feel happy pushing a barrow full of spuds up let alone a person in a wheelchair.

My only fear about guidelines and regulations for portable wheelchair ramps is that whoever draws them up doesn’t just cover their back by making them to strict.

If they base the guidelines on Part M Building Regulations I fear portable ramps will no longer be practical and this will be used as another excuse to do nothing, resulting in wheelchair users losing out again.
